The thickness of steel tube is one of the most important characters in industry production. At present, the way of traditional manual measuring is adopted which has some problems, such as low efficiency and high cost. As the technology of digital image developing and wildly used, it is viable to apply image processing and analysis technology into steel tube thickness. According to the object steel tube's sate and the image, studying how to use image analyzing technology to measure steel tube's thickness, is this paper's main content.This paper uses the technology based on digital image analyzing to process and analyze the object image, then finally compute the thickness. The main research contains three parts: the object's state analyzing, image pre-processing, and thickness measuring. During the study, common methods and algorithms of image pre-processing and thickness measuring has been considered and tried. According to object steel tube's state, chooses the appropriate preprocessing methods after experiments and analysis, and study the method of edge-detection and thickness-measuring for certain precision. This paper uses edge detecting method based on image scanning to detect the inner and outer edge and introduces a new thickness measuring method based on the shortest distance. The new method introduced here has two parts: edge tracing and the shortest distance computing. By tracing edge information, steel tube's locating accuracy is improved. And by using thickness computing algorithm based on the shortest distance, error rate of steel tube thickness is decreased.In the experiment part, uses the measuring method introduced in this paper to analyze the steel tube image. As the results shows, the measuring method can complement the measuring work successfully. In the meantime, a solution to the steel tube thickness measuring system is given here, which gives good preparation for further study.
