Computer aided re-assembling fractured objects is a difficult problem in the fields of computer vision, image analysis. Bronze re-assembling is part of the problem, which we are researching. The academe of the world did a lot of work on the general rigid, but did little on the special rigid like bronze, which is transmutative. The Visualization Institute of North West University started to do some research on the problem. This paper focuses on the key technique of computer aided bronze restoration, and has developed a real VBR(virtual bronze restoration ) system. The main works are as follows:1. The models for VBR are researched: solid model, external face model and surface model. The foundational methods of VBR are analyzed. A model about bronze fragments is put forward.2. The restoration of distorted bronze solution is built both in the slight distortion and the violent distortion.3. The expression and description of space surface is demonstrated. Invariant moments are used to describe the surface. The space surface character curve matching method especially the one by contour is presented.4. The introduction of the surface merging and two useful strategies for merging is brought forward. A fast method for merging based on local coordinate transform is advanced. Furthermore, some practical problems on surface merging are investigated in the paper. 5. A VBR system is designed and implemented, which proved to run stably fast and precisely when is used to restore distortion and match bronze pieces.
