Digital archaeology is an intercross field raised recently, which integrates information technology with traditional archaeology. Virtual relic restoration (VRR) is one of the most important aspects in digital archaeology, Reserchers especially these in the institute of visualization of Northwest University have achieved a lot in this field. This paper focuses on the key technique of computer aided relic restoration, and has developed a real VRR system. The main works are as follows:1. The models for VRR are built: solid model, external face model and surface model. The foundational methods of VRR are analyzed. A model about relic fragments is put forward.2. The expression and description methods of space curve are demonstrated. The methods of using moment, Fourier to describe the space curve is proposed. By summarizing and analyzing the space curve algorithms, putting forward the space curve semi-matching method based on our VRR system. Proving that this is a fast, simple and precise method for matching the irregular space curve.3. The expression and description of space surface is demonstrated. Invariant moments are used to describe the surface. The space surface character curve matching method especially the one by contour is presented. As for space mesh surface, the method of getting the contour from space mesh surface is achieved.4. The introduction of the surface merging and two useful strategies for merging is brought forward. A fast method for merging based on local coordinate transform is advanced.Furthermore, some practical problems on surface merging are investigated in the paper.5. A VRR system is designed and implemented, which proved to run stably fast and precisely when is used to match relic pieces. It promotes the efficiency of restoring the relic, so it is of great practical value.
