Most of the excavated relics are cracked and more or less axial symmetric, such as bowls and pottery. Unfortunately the missing pieces cannot be found easily near the excavation sites due to the natural causes or human intervention. Those cracked relics, however, are still valuable for archaeology and appreciation. Thus, a great number of literatures have tackled the problem that answers how computers may restore the original appearance of those cracked relics automatically. Based on the special geometric characteristics of axial symmetric relics and by the virtue of the development of various related technologies, namely Computer Graphics, Computer Vision and digitization methods, the thesis shows how to reconstruct or restore the original digital models from the digitized models of the cracked relics. In addition, people can appreciate these output digital relic models from the website. The works from this thesis also demonstrate another example for the protection of culture heritage using digital methods. In the following, we list our main achievements,a) Under the help of methods from the literature, we approach a method for approximating the axis of the axial cracked relics, thus, supporting the following work.b) We approach a method for fitting the profile of the cracked relics using smoothing spline.c) We approach two methods for restoring the original model of the cracked relics. One is surface reconstruction;the other is local surface repairing.d) The recovered digital models of the cracked relics are mapped by the digital textures.e) We implement a recover system and design the user interface.
