Photorealistic rain can greatly enhances the scenes of outdoor reality. Now it has been an important research area in computer graphics. Such technology is also being used more and more in the production of film effects and computer games. Many of the existing real-time rendering systems only concern with rainfall, which is a single detail of rain effects. However, the environment of rainy day is very complicated in real life. The interaction between the rain and the surrounding objects may produce many kinds of visual effects. In order to create a convincing rainy day environment, this paper choose to implement many representative effects in rainy day, including rendering precipitation based on particle system, simulation of scattering effects based on analytic method, rendering wet effect and splash on the ground based on bump mapping and, animation and rendering of water droplets trickling down on transparent glass pane etc. By the programmable function of modern GPU, Many of these effects can be fully achieved on hardware. This paper comprehensively describes how to achieve these effects using data storage and transport technology of existing graphics hardware. Finally, we integrate these methods to make a complete editable special effects rendering system of rainy day. At present, the system has been successfully migrated to the existing rendering engine, and applied to vessel driving simulation system.
