Augmented reality (AR) is a new technology which can combine the real world information with the virtual world information seamless. Through supplementing the real world with 3D virtual objects that appear to coexist in the same space as the real world, AR system enhances the user's perception of and interaction with the real world. The main purpose of this paper is to design and implement an augmented reality system which can be used in the football match broadcasting. Through analyzing the basic structure and the features of the augmented reality system, Visual C++ 6.0, Directshow and Intel OpenCV are chosen to be the main design tools. The paper consists of two parts according to the purpose of the study. First, the 3-D registration problem of the system which is the most essential issue in designing an augmented reality system is considered. A nature feature based registration method is introduced in this paper. By calculating the image of the absolute conic and the homography matrix between planes, the system is accurately calibrated. The results indicate that it is efficient and robust. Then, the requirements of the graphic displaying and interaction in the augmented reality system are first investigated. An augmented reality system for the football match broadcasting is designed and implemented. The principles and methods of the whole system are discussed in detail. The video capture and image processing module, virtual information registration module and the interactive module, which are all the important research parts of the system, are all discussed in an elaborate way.
