An augmented reality (AR) system generates a composite view for the user. It is a combination of the real scene viewed by the user and a virtual reality (VR) scene generated by the computer that augments the scene with additional information. It is a new technology which can combine the real world information with the virtual world information seamless. The main purpose of this paper is to use a new calibration pattern to complete the theoretical analysis of augmented reality and the software development. There are 4 pairs of concentric circles on the pattern. The radius of all the outer circles are same, and the radius of all the inner circles are different. We use concentric circle-based calibration method for 3D registration, develop the video capture module based on DirectShow and the virtual object rendering module based on Direct3D.This paper is consisted of two parts according to the purpose of the study. The part one includes the first three chapters, we introduce the theories of camera calibration related to the project geometry. The algorithm of camera calibration is always an important research topic, and the project geometry provides the key mathematical basis. We also analyze the function of ARToolKit and the realization of its main function modules. In part two, we design a new calibration pattern and analyze the concentric circle-based calibration method. In this paper by using 4 pairs of concentric circles on the pattern, we can construct the image of the center of the circles, and calculate the imaged circular points. By calculating homography matrix we at last obtain the camera calibration matrix. The result indicates that it is an efficient method in augmented reality system.
