With the coming of the 21st century, man is entering into a brand-new multimedia age. Digital Video Processing, as the most important, expressive and complex one in multimedia, has progressed quite a lot. An augmented reality( AR) system generates a composite view for the user. It is a combination of the real scene viewed by the user and a virtual reality (VR) scene generated by the computer that augments the scene with additional in formation. It is a new technology which can combine the real world information with the virtual world information seamless.The main purpose of this paper is to design and implement a PC based augmented reality software system. To achieve this goal, we analyzed the basic structure and feature of the augmented reality system. According to analyzing result, we develop this AR system with visual c++ 6.0and DirectX9.0 SDK.The paper consisted of two parts according to the purpose of the study. In part one,we mainly discuss the Self-Calibration. The algorithm of camera's Self-Calibration is always an important research domain. In this paper by using a circle and a line in scene, we can fit quadratic curve and calculate the circular point. By calculating homography matrix we at last obtain the camera calibration .The result indicates it is efficient in augmented reality system. In part two we analyze require of the graphics display and interact in augmented reality, and then we put forward a scheme to design and complement augmented reality system. The principle and method to complement of video capture and compound display are also discussed.
