Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that could add virtual objects, scenes or information generated by computer into the real scene. It will strengthen or supplement things seen by human eye. People can enhance the perception of real world through it. This paper analyzes the key technologies of AR system, including display technology, camera calibration, and registration technology. Then sum up the basic architecture of AR system by monocular vision.The major develop kit of AR is ARToolkit, it is mainly used to develop the AR application towards indoor. ARToolKit implements registration and tracking through marker. Virtual object could be placed on the marker accurately. ARToolKit displays different kinds of object through recognizing different markers, and gets the pose and orientation of the virtual object through marker. Marker is good for displaying virtual objects but limits the application of AR in design field. This paper reduces the marker dependence in ARToolKit through adding some interactive operation, making the AR technology could be used in design field, help user to discuss the design of case.ARToolKit is an open source develop kit. But the details explanation of its code is few, this paper sum up the principle and related algorithm of ARToolKit through analyzing it. Then improve and modify it, make it possible to get the camera's inner parameter in real-time. And adding the interactive operation make the user could edit and adjust the virtual object through mouse or keyboard.In this paper the AR system uses AVI video record real scene, and ordinary display output equipment show augmented results. When used in the building planning, designer could browse the effect that virtual building add into real scene, and proof the design thoughts.
