Based on the application of natural language understanding to product design, the noun phrase subordinate to user requirements, which expressed in natural language style, is understood and analyzed. With the other system running, the results are conversed into the requirement of conceptual design to support the future design.Firstly,method based on knowledge should be adopted to the natural language understanding applied to product design domain according to the characteristic of natural language understanding in design domain. Secondly, conceptual dependency theory is chosen as an important complementarity to the method based on knowledge, by the analysis of semantic analysis of the characteristic of Chinese. Thirdly, conceptual dependency trees are set up that based on the conceptual dependency theory to denote the relation of concepts. By analysis of details of the intension and the extension of concepts, noun, dynamic noun, and noun phrase templates are established on method based on knowledge. It is analysed the type and characteristic of each kind of coupling relation among the attributive-centered relation, coordinate relation and event noun that based on the semantic analysis of them. It is accomplished understanding of the coupling relation of them. It is accomplished analysis of the erasing different meanings of semantic understanding of noun phrase in noun-clustering of discourse analysis. Forthly, Semantic analysis program is designed to understand the sentence on the basis of the done work, which can understand the complex noun phrase in corresponding fields. Lastly, Semantic analysis of natural language understanding is applied to requirement analysis archetypal system for the design of cam gears. The noun phrase in user requirements is understood and analyzed. With other models running, the system runs well after debuging.
