The radar target simulation is the result of system simulation technology integrating with radar technology, the object of the radar target simulation is the target and environment, the result of simulation is repetition the radar echo signal including radar target and target environment signal. In fact, the radar echo signal is considered as composed by the rehabilitative waveform which the emission waveform after delay and Doppler frequency shift. The simulation technology has been widely used in debugging and performance valuation. Adopting the radar simulation technology can shorten the radar development cycle, reduce the cost of development, and so on. The application of real time radar signal simulation exists in every stage of development, debugging and using of radar.This paper introduced common simulation methods and many implementing means of the radar target simulation. Target echo signal mainly includes three kinds of information: range, frequency domain signal and time domain signal. Recently, there are relevant technologies to deal with the three kinds of information, such as large dynamic programme controlled attenuator which can be used to realize range simulation, Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) or high speed signal process system which can be used to realize target Doppler frequency, and so on. Compared with the realization of the range and frequency information, the realization of distance delay was more difficult in the past. The old method is Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) delay, which got the poor quality of the signal and the narrow bandwidth. Now there are many realization methods, for examples, by controlling of time delay in the digital signal process system, distance delay can be realized. With the development of fiber-optic communications, the delay method by combining fiber-optic directly has also been used in practice, but still there are some problems. As the technology of digital radio frequency memory(DRFM)progresses, the quality of the signal has been highly promoted.Based on the related mathematics model, the paper focuses on the DRFM. The method of realizing the radar target simulation and the hardware circuit based on FPGA is discussed in detail. As an aid equipment of radar, the universal and simplified operation of the radar target simulator is more and more attracting people's attention. So the study of common radar simulator will also gradually to the rich. In this paper, by the content of the study involves only part of this field, the study of the common radar simulator will gradually enrich along with the development of radar system and simulation technology.
