Chemical literatures are products from theories, experiments and applications in chemistry and subjects related chemistry. With the development of modern science and technology, the quantity of chemical information increases heavily, and the spread of chemical information becomes fast. Now Internet has become an important carrier with chemical information. It is so conveniently that more and more chemists deal with and retrieve chemical information by computer. Chemical literatures retrieval system has become an important tool for chemists to keep on scientific research. An ontology is a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization, and provides to describe the concepts and the relations between these concepts in some domain, so the concepts and the relations will have specific and unique definition, and be shared as common understanding. Then Ontology can provide a shared set of concepts in communication process within human and machine. The purpose of introducing ontology to chemical literatures field is to discuss how to use ontology as a new technology of chemical information retrieval and sharing, therefore we can solve the problems exited in chemical literature retrieval system.Firstly, this paper discusses the concept of ontology, the classification and the function of ontology, also the principle of construction for ontology, then introduces the main methods of building ontology today, including TOVE, ENTERPRISE, KACTUS, METHONTOLOGY, SENSUS, IDEF5, SEVEN STEPS etc. Secondly, this paper analyses and compares some chemical literature retrieval system all over the world, then summarizes some disadvantages of our retrieval system. At last, with the theory ahead, we construct a small chemical literature ontology. In this process, we use OWL recommended by W3C as ontology description language, and use Protégé3.3.1 developed by Stanford university as ontology editor to write ontology files. We expect to build a widespread and extensible chemical literature ontology which can be used in chemical information retrieval system, so the actions of chemical information retrieval will become conveniently, rapidly and exactly.
