DVD Recorder becomes to be the center of digital home theatre gradually. It not only has all the functions of traditional DVD player, but also has the unique advantage of recording the audio and video signal from player, TV, digital video, and it can edit the multimedia content. However, most of DVD Recorders now only support MPEG-2 encoding. Compared with MPEG-2, MPEG-4 has the advantages of low bit-rate stream, and high coding efficiency, etc. As MPEG-4 encoding techniques increasingly mature, their advantages are more obvious. So, this paper provides a DVD Recorder solution based on MPEG-4 encoding techniques.The solution choose DMN-8603 chip of LSI Logic. The chip has the advanced features of reducing BOM (bill of materials), reducing design complexity, and accelerating product to market. DMN-8603 includes CPU and image engine, DV codec, MPEG-4 codec, SACD decoder and USB controller, etc.Firstly functions of DVD Recorder are analyzed, then background knowledge of DVD Recorder is introduced, and then video compress standard and digital audio techniques are summarized. Based on those theories, this paper provides the hardware and software architecture for DVD Recorder. And then, MPEG-4 recording module is designed and implemented in detail. To hide the difference of various file system, the paper introduces Unified File System. And UFS makes file operation for MPEG-4 recording easier. This paper summarizes AVI file format and typical real-time recording system, and then introduces a new method of real-time recording AVI stream on optical storage especially write-once disc.
