Due to its compactness and excellent performance, the microring resonator has become an important device unit in integrated optics. It can achieve a large dispersion in a small size. Microring resonator is especially attractive in dispersion compensation application. In this thesis, the dispersion characteristics of common microring structures are calculated and analyzed after deriving the optical field relations in them. The influence of the structure parameters of the microring resonator array is discussed. It's demonstrated that the coupling coefficient and the radii of the microrings are the main factors that determine the dispersion. A new microring resonator structure is proposed in this thesis. The output expression and the group delay of the novel structure are derived, and the factors that influence its dispersion character are analyzed. The dispersion value, bandwidth, and free spectral range are optimized comprehensively. The method to optimize the microring resonators for dispersion compensation is given. The work in this thesis may offer a reference for constructing dispersion compensator with good performance using microring resonator arrays.
