Low-rate Wireless Personal Area Network is an interconnecting technology upon which low-rate, low-power and low-cost devices communicate with each other and exchange information. It has promising application aspect in areas such as smart home, telemedicine and industrial control system. Integrating IPv6 into LR_WPAN, we can assign each node an IP address, which facilitates point-to-point control and LR-WPAN's access to IPv6 Internet. So, it's predicted that this technology will give great impetus to ubiquitous M2M (Machine to Machine) communication. In order to interconnect LR-WPAN devices and assure the quality of data communication, IEEE802.15.4 workgroup has established and is perfecting the physical and MAC layer protocol. IETF established 6L0WPAN workgroup to research IPv6 communication in LR-WPAN, but IPv6 LR-WPAN routing protocol standard is in the stage of research and discussion and the proposal is imperfect. Supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, this paper deeply researched IPv6 LR-WPAN dynamic routing protocol and proposed an energy-aware fast convergence routing protocol named O_LWRP with low requirements of hardware resources. As all existing IPv6 LR-WPAN routing protocols are improvement of AODV, this paper deeply researched AODV. After summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of existing LR-WPAN routing protocol LOAD, we proposed an innovative routing query mechanism—double-ring search, which limited the range of broadcast packets and made network fast-convergent utilizing the penetrating characteristic of unicast. It is a compromise of bandwidth and convergence speed. Moreover, the protocol resolved the problem of unicast reflux in the process of route repair.O_LWRP is implemented, tested and compared with other similar protocols. The experiment result shows that O_LWRP has advantage in memory save, link repair and bandwidth usage. The last part of this paper presents the conclusion and future work.
