Water quality monitoring plays a significant role in environmental protection. Thus, the research on improving the efficiency and the automatic ability and on reducing the cost of water quality monitoring, is meaningful for now and the future.The main difficulties in water quality automatic monitoring are as below: 1) The low intelligence yet high price of the terminal water quality monitoring instruments; 2) The need for high-effective, low-cost, and wide-spread telecommunication caused by the dispersed monitoring spots; 3) The combination and consistency between local management and central administration in multi-regional water quality monitoring.To solve these problems, this paper introduces a water quality automatic monitoring system which has a 3-layer structure. The terminal water quality monitoring instrument in this system is based on embedded system which includes S3C44B0X microprocessor andμC/OS-II real time operation system. The telecommunication between the terminal monitoring instrument and the upper-layer control station is founded on the short message service (SMS) provided by GSM network. Based on Microsoft SQL Server 2000, a distributed database system is designed among the control stations and the central administration station.The application and popularization of this water quality automatic monitoring system will highly advance the performance in water quality monitoring while cut down the cost of its manufacturing and maintenance, and therefore bring us favorable social and commercial benefits.
