Multimedia and network are two aspects of the most promising ways of the embedded system. Many universities has already offered courses about embedded system, or planned to at present. Most of them are focusing on hardware modules of the embedded system, caring little of its multimedia and network application. The embedded multimedia experimental system can not only assist students to lean traditional embedded system knowledge, but also help to deep into the application area of the embedded system to study multimedia information-processing and network accessing which are new technology closely-related to embedded system.With the background mentioned above, a scheme of designing and realization the embedded multimedia experimental system based on micro-controller S3C44B0X and embedded operating system uCLinux is proposed. The S3C44B0X which take the ARM 16/32 bit ARM7TDMI RISC architecture has low price but good performance, and is rich in peripheral interface. So, the chip is applicable in teaching platform. Embedded Linux operating system has developed very fast because of its free, open source, plenty software supporting and other reasons, and has become one the mainstream operating system. uCLinux is very suitable for ARM7 embedded processor which has no MMU. Based on the above selection, this thesis mainly discusses the design and realization of the system's hardware and parts of software. How to build up the whole framework for practical application is analyzed and how to make a smallest system and an expanding system with the hardware on hand reasonably and efficiently is also emphasized. Then,the design and realization of a Bootloader suitable for the experimental system is analyzed,as well as the hard points and key points of transplanting uCLinux to a new platform. In the end, to satisfy the need of high capacity storage device, how to build up a read/write embedded file system JFFS2 is discussed.The successful design and realization of the embedded multimedia experimental system platform lays a solid foundation for further development, and it also can be the research and developing platform for other embedded system application.
