With the rapid development of computer technology, communication technology and consumer electronic technology, real-time embedded system has been widely used. There are a lot of demands for real-time embedded operating system in fields of scientific research, engineering design, military technology, commerce entertainment etc.Embedded real-time operating system is a development platform for embedded applications. It designs for different kinds of hardwares, provides uniform user interfaces, and simplifies the difficulty of embedded applications' development and codes' management. Different with traditional operation systems, the embedded real-time operation system demands better real-time performance and can make correct and real-time responses to exterior affairs.The researchers of embedded real-time perating system focus on Linux because of its opening of source code, its loadable kernel module and high flexibility of kernel size. But the design of time divided multi-tasks limits Linux's application in real-time computing. In order to satisfy embedded systems' demands of real-time performance,we must make effective extensions to Linux.This thesis presents the author's work in research and practice on the Linux-based Embedded Operating System for her master degree. Most of the thesis focuses on the requirements of building embedded system based on Linux. Ar first, it describes the concepts of embedded system, advantages of Linux serving as an embedded operating system and concepts of real time and embedded real time operating system, presents performance indexes and components of RTOS in details. Then describes disadvantages of Linux in hard real time, analyses and compares projects of adapting Linux to Embedded System, lists reasons of adopting hard realtime project. Then according to the project, installs and realizes a real time Linux system based on Linux 2.4.20 and rtlinux-3.2-pre3, tests its real time performance and puts it in a flash disk of 32M. In the last part of this thesis, gives suggestions and prospects of developing a mature embedded system which have the most competition in Chinese market.
