Recently, with the trend of 3C (Computer, Communication, Consumer) into one, and the trend of the micromation and the specialization of Computer, the Embedded System (ES) comes into being. There are promising future and practical signification to do some researches on the development of the ES.Because of the increasing complexity of the embedded systems, the embedded operating system has become the most important part of the embedded system, and embedded operating system has a significant effect on the system performance. Consequently, embedded operating system has been one of the focuses of embedded system research. As an open source operating system, Linux is more and more concerned for its well performance. However, as Linux is not designed for embedded system, many aspect of Linux should be optimized and improved for embedded system.At First, a summarization about embedded system, embedded operating system and embedded Linux operating system is given in the thesis. Then thoroughly analyzes the problems of the embedded Linux: the real-time characteristic of the kernel, the blended file system and the Chinese support and gives the solution for these problems. The development and optimization of an embedded Linux operating system implemented on Intel Strong ARM platform is studied in detail. Finally, the practical technique and process of embedded Linux operating system applications is introduced simply by summarizing an applications system.The research of this thesis can be used in the development of embedded applications based on operating system.
