This thesis introduces the design and realization of a embedded portable terminal system which is for increasing the efficiency of our armed forces during combat operations. The terminal system is portable and design for the individual or troop commanders. It is not only capable of locating and navigating, but also providing the real-time situations of being in a battlefield. According to the situations of the battlefield, which the system provides, commanders are able to analyze the conditions of combat zone in order to bring up the most suitable plan for the specific situation. Such terminal system is one of the most important apparatuses for our armed forces to achieve the goal of being informational success. The thesis mainly focuses on the kernel customization of Windows CE operating system, the design of hardware and the driver development for the portable terminal system. First of all, we briefly discuss the structures of the terminal system and the necessities of its function. And then we lay out the plan of how we realize them. The hardware of terminal system consist of Intel PXA255 embedded microprocessor, and other peripheral apparatuses such as camera, UART, keypad, GPRS, and GPS. The terminal system not only can preview the landscale in 20fps but also can transmit data with UART in 203.4kbps. Moreover, it provides the uses with a keypad and can receive the Geographic coordinate by GPS module. Secondly, we finish the driver which based on Windows CE stream driver module and expose all the hardware resource to applications. The thesis has described all the work done for the terminal system including the procedures of building the Windows CE embedded operating system and the design of hardware, device driver and the communication program. The first stage of development of the portable terminal system, which we discussed in this thesis, was completed in the laboratory. After being tested, it has been proved that both of the hardware and software function properly.
