With the improvement of the computer technology, communication technology, and microelectronics technology, the embedded technology has made rapid progress. It applies to Intelligent Appliances, industrial control, and consumer electronics such as MP3, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) and so on. The popularization of computer network and the advancement of multimedia technology accelerate the integration of the consumer electronics, computer and communication, which makes the embedded technology a hot study topic.Embedded microprocessors are popular technology that applied in the embedded systems. The Intel XSale processor family provides industry-leading high performance, low power capabilities, rich peripheral integration. It's used widely in the field of hand-held devices such as PDA. On the other hand, Microsoft Windows CE is becoming the most popular embedded OS especially in high-end PDA market because of its kind human-machine interface, multiple platform support capability, and easy programming method.The work presented in this paper focuses on developing a wireless handheld POS (Point of Sale) system. The hardware platform is based on the Intel PXA270 embedded microprocessor and its embedded OS is Microsoft Windows CE. The complication and high porformace of this system represents the top level of the modern embedded system.At first, this paper overviews the background of the embedded system and PDA from the point of the system architecture. We discuss the design of the POS system and expatiate on the hardware design solution based on the demand of the consumer and the embedded design methodology. The paper introduces the embedded operating system emphasis on Microsoft Windows CE. The author also analyses the Bootloader, and the debugging/development environment based on the architecture of Windows CE.And then, this paper specializes in some drivers' development which includes the COM driver, GSM/CDMA driver, touch screen driver, USB Client driver and power management driver. And the GSM/CDMA can share a common driver through RIL. The finally testing proves that the system is reliable and the design is successful. This project has already started a batch production.Lastly, the paper summarizes the development of the embedded system software. The author also describes the prospect of the embedded system.
