This thesis introduces the design and realization of a embedded battlefield information processing terminal system which is for improving the army combat capabilities during the constructor of digital battlefield. The terminal system is chiefly designed for the individual. It is not only capable of locating and navigating, but also providing the real-time situations of being in a battlefield. The soldier can take advantage of the terminal system to collect and edit the battlefield information, and can transmit them to the headquarters or other terminal systems by ultrashort wave radio station. According to the situations of the battlefield, which the system provides, commanders are able to analyze the conditions of combat zone in order to bring up the most suitable plan for the specific situation. The thesis mainly focuses on the kernel customization of Windows CE operating system, the design of hardware, the driver development for the portable terminal system and the application software. First of all, we briefly discuss the necessities of its function and the structures of the terminal system. And then we lay out the plan of how we realize them. At the same time, we analyze the flow of developing embedded system based on Windows CE. The hardware of terminal system consist of Intel PXA255 embedded microprocessor, and other peripheral apparatuses such as display module, multimedia processing module, network transmission module and memory module. The terminal system not only can display the user interface with TFT-LCD, but also can perform up to 25fps QVGA simultaneous encode in MPEG4 format and decode. Moreover, it can transmit data with network in 3MB/s and surport up to 1GB NandFlash. Secondly, the thesis elaborates the approaches and flow of developing device driver based on Windows CE. Finally, the thesis details the software design approaches of electronic map processing module, battlefield situation processing module and media processing module. The first stage of development of the terminal system, which we discussed in this thesis, was completed. After being tested, it has been proved that both of the hardware and software function properly.
