Evolvable hardware utilizes evolutional algorithm and reconfigurable devices to design the digital circuit which can be like the living creature life to dynamically change the structure according to the environment. Evolvable hardware can improve reliability and usability of electron system especially the electron devices which work chronically in the terrible environment. The research on the approach to design digital circuit based on on-line evolution is one of the important research realm. The basic principle and method of evolution hardware are firstly introduced. The evolution technique and present research are summarized and generalized. The software platform and hardware board is illuminated.To accelerate the speed of evolution, self-adaptable factor is studied in evolution algorithm. Based on HereBoy algorithm, the enhanced genetic algorithm which references on evolution strategy (ES) and Simulated Annealing is proposed. Some typical digital circuits are taken as examples to validate the efficiency of enhanced genetic algorithm. The experimental results show that the speed of evolution is accelerated and the time of evolution is shortened based on the enhanced genetic algorithm.The on-line evolution of complicated digital circuit is one of difficulties of EHW. This paper develops on-line evolution of complicated digital circuit based on multi-level decomposition strategy, studies the way to encode the digital circuit, and proposes the approach to design on-line complicated digital circuit. Some typical digital circuits are taken as examples to validate the efficiency of multi-level decomposition evolution in EHW. The experimental results indicate that the speed and the successful probability of hardware evolution with multi-level decomposition strategy are greatly improved.
