On October 14th, 1918, Journalism Research Society of Beijing University, the first research body that studied journalism in China, was founded at Beijing University, which marked the beginning of China's research and education on journalism.The period of May 4th Movement in 1919 saw the replacement of the old culture by the new and the collision between old and new thoughts. The New Culture Movement strongly denounced feudalism and feudal culture and promoted western thoughts on democracy and freedom. During that time, many western science, thoughts and culture were introduced to China. Just before May 4th Movement, China's journalistic practice had developed for almost 100 years and begun to ripe. Chinese journalists had accumulated a lot of journalistic experiences and thought much about journalism, which were the original journalistic thoughts in China. With the introduction of western journalism, Chinese became more and more familiar with this new subject. It was in this background that Journalism Research Society of Beijing University set up.Journalism Research Society of Beijing University had a significant influence on China's journalism and journalistic education. This thesis aims at exploring Journalism Research Society in several fields of vision from different angles and elaborating its significance and effect on China's construction of journalistic discipline and journalistic education.Firstly, the thesis analyzes the Society's activities through the field of journalistic history. The major activities of the Society were recorded in Beijing University Journal, through which it will sort out the Society's history and analyze its major stages and significant events.Journalism Research Society of Beijing University was initiated by Cai Yuanpei, who acted as the president of Beijing University, and the other two tutors were Xu Baohuang, who had once studied journalism in US, and Shao Piaoping, a well-known journalist. The two tutors drew on knowledge of western journalism, analyzed China's situation and taught knowledge of journalism to the members in the Society. The Society also published China's first publication on journalism, News Weekly. At the same time, Journalism and Practical Applied Journalism, based on their lecture notes, were the earliest books on journalism written by Chinese.Secondly, this thesis explores the Society's important effect on the building of journalism through the field of the construction of journalistic discipline. Journalism Research Society was the first journalistic academic body in China, which included Cai Yuanpei, Xu Baohuang and Shao Piaoping as its promoters and researchers, and many progressive students of Beijing University, who had much journalistic experience, as its members.The process of the Society's "instilling journalistic knowledge" strengthened the discipline-consciousness, and it put more and more emphasis on the research of theories. The Society set up News Weekly hopefully to spread and study journalism through publication. In December, 1919, the Society published Xu Baohuang's Journalism, which initially established the disciplinary framework of China's journalism and explored systematically, for the first time in Chinese history, many basic theories and major problems in the field of journalism. Journalism also created a new style of combining theory and practice in China's journalistic works. Its content, basic theories and disciplinary framework was carried forward by the following successors, and the book played a significant role in the building and development of China's journalism.Finally, this thesis studies the Society's educational activities on journalism through the field of journalistic education.Journalism Research Society of Beijing University was the first to spread the knowledge on journalism. Moreover, the Society provided us two fine tutors, Xu Baohuang and Shao Piaoping. And Xu Baohuang was especially regarded as the first master in the field of journalistic education. Journalism and Practical Applied Journalism, based on the lecture notes of the two tutors, were put on the list of textbooks by a lot of colleges. The Society's journalistic education has created the original planning, and its content and teaching patterns have left great influences on the following journalistic education.The Society, on the other hand, has trained a lot of excellent journalists and developed Chinese journalistic course.The founding of Journalism Research Society of Beijing University was the original model of China's journalism and journalistic education.
