Instant Messaging Service supports the transfer of text information or multimedia information quickly between users and delivering the user's presence information to his contacts in time and selectively. In recent years, Instant Messaging Service has developed rapidly. It's not only the killer application on internet but also seen as a key value-added service in mobile network. At the same time, the organizations including IETF, OMA and 3GPP/3GPP2 carry on the work about the standardization of the instant Messaging Service. IETF first set up a working group called IMPP to create the basic requirements and basic framework about Instant Mesaging Service. IETF supports both XMPP and SIP/SIMPLE. OMA accepted the WV IMPS as one of the protocols and also adopted the SIP/SIMPLE as its basic standard. 3GPP/3GPP2 supports the SIP/SIMPLE too. But SIP/SIMPLE is complex and involves many works, so it hasn't been finished yet. China Mobile accepted the SIP-C which is originated by Microsoft as the standard of IM. SIP-C maintains the basic framework of SIP/SIMPLE but predigests it for mobile network. In such circumstances, obviousely it is very necessary to research the protocol mapping. So, IETF has committed to producing an interoperable standerd for XMPP and SIP/SIMPLE. OMA has set a sub-workgroup to research the protocol mapping between SIP/SIMPLE and WV IMPS. WV IMPS was originated by Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson so it has been adopted by these clients widely including Chinese market. China Mobile hopes that these WV IMPS clients can use the IM service provided by IIC in which the SIP-C is the basic protocol. So it is very important to research the protocol mapping between WV IMPS and SIP-C and design the IM Gateway. This article illustrates the design of the IM protocol mapping and the implementation of the SIP-C model in the gateway system. In chapter one, it introduces the background of the value-added service recently; In chapter two, the IM service features and the development of the service in both internet and mobile network are described as a whole, and the main protocols related to IM service are introduced. Chapter three, one of the emphases of this article, describes the interoperable models between SIP/SIMPLE and XMPP, between SIP/SIMPLE and WV IMPS firstly, then gives the the interoperable models between SIP-C and WV IMPS in requirements, whole design and the models functions. In Chapter five and Chapter six, the design and implementation of SIP-C model and the capability tests about this model are given. Finally the progress and the next step of the project are summarized.
