With the science and technology developed, nowadays, the food and beverage industry facilitate the customer and promote the enterprise depending on the achievement of science and technology. Dining terminal has been developed in this background, which use advanced wireless communications technology, embedded handheld terminal technology, embedded mobile database, and remote monitering and controling technology. That makes the customer more convenient, self-determined and reassuring meals.In this paper, the idea, system architecture, and functions of a self-service restaurant terminal has been put forward. The hardware and software environment of the handheld terminal are deeply discussed: the hardware includes PXA270 LCD display module, Touchscreen module, CF card wireless communications module, etc. and the software includes the transplantion of the embedded Linux operating system on PXA270 platform, the transplantion of the Qt and Qtopia in embedded Linux, the development of database in IIS of Windows, the development of the functions software of Web Server and monitoring and controling of the Apache.First, embedded Linux operating system has been transplanted to PXA270 board. Second, the embedded Qt and Qtopia software have been developed in the embedded Linux operation system. Basing on the analysis of the server database modules, the functions of display menu, categories searching, orders, bill, and data printing have been realized. Compared with the existing handheld terminal on market, the design is different of extending the functions including the web server. The chef can cook by visiting customer's handheld terminal for order. In addition, this system provided remote monitoring function, which has the customer simultaneously see the cook process to reassuring meals.The design has reference and pratical value to embedded systems development in the embedded Linux operting system environment. Meanwhile, it has a market prospects and practical value, since it is portable and be used to support a variety of wireless Internet occasions.
