With the rapid development of Internet services, higher and higher requirements of network bandwidth are needed. Since the backbone has already the adequate ability to sustain the broadband, access network bandwidth becomes the bottleneck of the whole network. As a solution for access network, EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) has mature technology and broad application of Ethernet. It has a Point-to-Multipoint Architecture and provides Multi-Service basing on Ethernet. It combines the advantage of Pon technology and Ethernet technology. With its features of high bandwidth, low cost and being used and updated easily. EPON is the best solution for access network. With EPON international standard—IEEE802. 3ah was released in 2004, the industry alliance of EPON has appealed many manufactures to participate actively. Now in North America and Japanese FTTH (Fiber to the Home) has been developed in a large scale, and in our country the experiment of FTTH has been started in some places.In order to guarantee EPON to operate steadily and efficiently, it is important to provide a reliable EMS(Element Management System). The thesis develops the EMS on the basis of EPON.The proxied devices of EPON are very large, and network management software runs in a embedded board, so the "simple and shortcut" SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is used to develop the EPON's EMS. But the SNMP which is the protocol of the application layer requires lower layer working normally and managed devices transmitting IP frames right, so the conventional SNMP has been difficult to match the need of the management of the access network. Base on the above reason, IEEE802.3 committee adds a suite of 0AM (Operation Administation Maintenance) protocols which achieve management goal of the data link layer of the access network. The thesis introduces SNMP protocol and 0AM protocol, narrates the realization of SNMP Agent under the environment of Linux and function and characteristic of OAM layer in detail.The thesis realizes the seamless connection of SNMP and OAM by using MIB(Management Information Base) as a bridge, uses BDB (Berkeley DataBase) which was developed by Berkeley which is Branch school of University of California to design MIB. The BDB not only saves the storage space, enhance query efficiency, but makes the design of program simple. Finally, simply narrates the process of transplanting Agent software to embeded system.
