SNMP-Based EPON Network Management Agnet Development

As the information infrustration building moves on, broadband accessbecomes necessary in this information society. The quick expansion ofethernet into access network made The Ethernet in First Mile Alliance andIEEE corperate and bring out the concept and technology: Ethernet PassiveOptical Network (EPON). EPON won much attention in access networkarea with its great bandwidth, low cost and the ability to provide multiplyservices. Now, the technology becomes more mature as the products go tomarket. GPON is another technology proposed by ITU and is featured in itshigher performance, better security and Qos. Compared to EPON, GPON isexpensive and its industry chain is not as mature as EPON's. We havereasons to believe that EPON will still popular in access network. As weknow, there is no network management unit in traditional Ethernet. To enterthe access network, it is important for EPON to take the networkmanagement into consideration. In EPON technology standard IEEE802.3ah, there is a clause about Operation, Administration andMaintenance, OAM for short. This clause difine the network managementfunction in data link layer. Then we can implement management combined with Simple Network Management Protocol in above layer. The main taskof the paper is the implenment SNMP agent for the EPON system.In this paper, the background and the situation both domestic andaboard of the research are analysed first, followed by the key concepts ofEPON and relevant information about SNMP. Then the illustration ofdesign of the embedded system board, on which the SNMP agent runs, isgiven in details. After that, comes the entire process of developing theSNMP agent on Linux operating system. As the EPON MIB has not beenstandardized, the designation of the MIB according to the function ofnetwork management is presented here in the paper. The net-snmp packageis adopted to develop the SNMP agent. For one reason, net-snmp is anopen-source project and is easy to be extended. For another, net-snmp hasbeen integrated into embedded linux, so the transplantation of the programswould be quick. Chapter five focuses on the transplantation of the SNMPagent to the embedded system board and verify the agent through HPOpenview NNM on manager station.
