As a solution for access network , EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) has mature technology and broad application of Ethernet . It has a Point-to-Multipoint Architecture and provides Multi-Service basing on Ethernet . It combines the advantage of Pon technology and Ethernet technology .With its feature of high bandwidth , low cost and being used and updated easily .EPON is the best solution for access network . It is very important to provide an reliable (EMS) Element Management System for EPON to assure more stable and more effective operation . Nowadays , there are many EMS using series port to obtain network information. Based on the characteristics of EPON system we design an EMS combining SNMP with OAM. The EMS can not only manage the EPON system but also improve its performance , so it is one component which is very important in EPON system.This thesis is about the designing and implementing the EMS of EPON system .The main contents are as follows:1) With reference to the IEEE802.3ah protocol ,we introduce the basic structure and advantages about EPON system2) Compare the characteristics of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) with CMIP (Common Management Information Protocol), after that we present an EMS based on SNMP.3) Give a detail discussion of SNMP. After that we design the EMS with the function of configuration management, performance management, fault management and security management, and give the way for the implementation.4) At the end of this thesis, we research into how to develop a SNMP Agent by net-snmp toolkit and how to design a MIB with BDB(Berkeley Data Base) .
