Wireless and wideband communication are the hot topics in the field of communication. Wireless communication makes the communication in anywhere, anytime and with anyone possible. And the wideband communication can deliver the data, voice, video and other information to companies and individuals quickly, which makes the work and life diversified. Thus, the integration of the wireless communication and the wideband communication is the direction of the development of future communication. Radio-On-Fiber technique is studied in this paper. This technique takes the advantage of the fiber and high frequency radio wave to realize the wideband communication with lower attenuation loss, large bandwidth, the immunity to radio frequency interference, the easy installation and maintenance, the reduced power consumption and the operational flexibility. The key techniques and the application of ROF are discussed in this paper. Background, the network architecture and the advantage of the ROF are discussed in the first chapter. The second chapter discusses the ROF transmission system, which are the Baseband-over-Fiber, the IF-over-Fiber and the RF-over-Fiber transmission systems. The key techniques of ROF such as the optical modulation formats, the electric modulation formats, the optical amplifier and the up-conversion technique are discussed in the third chapter. In the modulation part, the principle of DSB, SSB, OCS and OFDM modulation formats are studied and compared. In the optical amplifier part, the principle of EDFA and Raman Fiber Amplifier as well as the design of its parameters are investigated. In the up-conversion part, the up-conversion technique based on the FWM is mainly investigated. After studying the transmission characteristic of FWM-generated signals, it can be got that the signal having the phase characteristic of CSRZ signal has the better transmission performance for its better characteristic against dispersion. ROF network protocol and its application are given in the fourth chapter. Finally, the conclusion is given in the fifth chapter.
