An optical network, generally speaking, is a wide concept. It covers all the networking, which involves optical sections in some point of the transmission. There are, however, many types of optical networks depending on equipment used in the way. This dissertation is focused on all-optical wavelength conversion and fiber supercontinuum pulse sources, which include :1. All-optical wavelength conversion based on FWM in SOAa) The principles and characteristics of this converter are studied theoretically on the basis of Lump model . Conversion efficiency and SNR of output are analyzed and influences of SOA gain and input pulse parameters on conversion output are discussed .b) The signal pulse output of EML (Electro-absorption Modulated Laser) drived by 10GHz RF with center wavelength of 1554.17 nm is wavelength converted with single pump mechanism .The constant efficiency and SNR can be obtained in a broad wavelength range with orthogonally polarized pump mechanism . The tunable range of conversin output is about 41.2 nm with 3dB fluctuation of conversion efficiency .c) Various SOA based wavelength conversion technologies, such as SOA-FWM, SOA-XGM, SOA-XPM , SOA-DPM and SOA+NOLM, are compared .2. Optical pulse compression based on fiber nonlinearitya) The optical pulse high order soliton effect compression (SEC) technology by using DSFs is studied theoretically . The characteristics of SEC and influences of input pulse parameters on compression factor and quality are discussed . Output pluses from AML-FL is compressed by SEC compressor to 4.86 ps .b) Adiabatic soliton compression (ASC) and high order soliton compression (1
