As the key technologies in DWDM network and Radio over Fiber (ROF) system, all-optical wavelength conversion and all-optical frequency up-conversion are the hot topics in the research area of all optical signal processing by using nonlinear device such as semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and high nonlinear fiber (HNF).The thesis includes two main parts:(1) A theoretical model of SOA is proposed, which includes Carrier Heating, Spectrum Hole Burning and Two-Photon Absorption. Using the model, cross gain modulation (XGM), cross phase modulation (XPM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) can be successfully explained. Especially the model was used to further research wavelength conversion of SOA assisted by a tunable filter under the different filter shapes and filter central wavelengths.(2) Based on Nonlinear Polarization Rotation (NPR), a new scheme was proposed to realized multi-wavelength frequency up-conversion at 2.5Gbit/s @20GHz/40GHz using SOA and HNF, respectively.
