Research And Establishment Of Practical Software Measurement System

Software industry emerged with the invention and extensive use of computers. Having experienced burgeoning, forming and rapid development stages, it has become the fastest-growing industrial sector with huge potential. Along with the development of information technology, software, as the IT carrier, increasingly spreads into every corner in the society, accordingly setting higher quality standards including feasibility, reliability, credibility, productive efficiency and capacity, and customer's satisfaction. Meanwhile, the software development relies on human resources and its complexity made the "software crisis" break out, with numerous software projects ending in failure. Experts analyze that the failure of most projects is due to the lack of effective process management. Thus, strengthening management is the way to resolve the thorny problem of the industry. Unmeasured things cannot be managed while measurement is the strong support to management. Only through measurement and obtaining, analyzing and using software development statistics, can software process management be enabled to play a role and can software development work make continuous improvement.How to measure software became an important topic in the software industry. Currently, there are a limited number of methods and theories on software measurement and they are relatively weak in terms of practical guidance. Through the in-depth study, the author established a highly efficient and practical software measurement system based on CMMI requirements, GQM method and PSM theory, including planning, implementation, analysis and result release. The author provides the way of thinking, working patterns and methods on establishment of measurement system and implementation of measurement, also giving a valuable example of applying this system to the author's company.The software measurement system described in this paper was successfully tried out in the author's company, with good results and achieving recognition from colleagues. It serves as a useful reference for all software companies on the establishment of practical and efficient measurement system; suggests methods on enforcing software development process management; therefore provides theoretical and practical guidance for the continuous improvement and establishment of powerful software development process through effective measurement's support to software projects and company's decision-making.
