The Internet is growing at an amazing speed in recent years and the applications over the Internet are becoming wider and wider. People can never be satisfied with current services, such as E-mail and Internet Exploration. They need better and more services like broad band, multimedia, Qos etc. All these items bring ISPs with new challenges. Therefore, MPLS is put to agenda and is considered to be a promising technology. It integrates the label-swapping paradigm with network-layer routing. Now, MPLS (MultiProtocol Label Switching) as a new switching technique for the Next Generation Network is currently a popular research topic.Network simulation is an important technology in communication and network research in present .This paper introduced how to modeling the network in OPNET environment. A simulation instance is given in order to show the steps in network simulation and how to measure the network performance. Based on simulation results, it is clear that MPLS network is more efficient then traditional IP network in traffic management and QoS implementation. MPLS can optimize network's performance. This paper first makes a brief review of the development of Network Simulation methods and MPLS technology. Section 2 and section 3 dwell on MPLS working mechanism, especially Integrated Service, Differentiated Service and Traffic engineering. Section 4 introduces OPNET Modeler, the simulation tool, its main features and presents a normal simulation methodology. In the section, we provide the details of our test networks, the simulation results, and draw our conclusions. Finally, this paper summarizes the relative achievements, and proposes the future works.
