Based on the analysis of the developing status of enterprise informationization, the problems against the integration of enterprise data are presented, and the significance of studying data exchange is further discussed.After studying the characteristic of data exchange and XML, the advantages of XML used as description model for data exchange are introduced. Through analyzing and extracting the basic content and element involved in data exchange, one universal and extensible XML-based data exchange model is proposed in this paper. This model aims at improving the flexibility, reusable and extensible capability of the exchange system. It is composed of component-document model, data mapping and conversion model, strategy of extracting information and resource-orientation mechanism, and it can be used as the instruction and essential principle of developing data exchange system.An architecture of data exchange system based on the basic model of data exchange is given. It follows module-document separation principle, and XML document is used to describe various information and data of the system, so the data and document can be identified and managed conveniently. The function and characteristic of each component are introduced, and the relation and interface between each part are described. Besides, model and instance of XML description document are given in this paper.Based on the above data exchange model and architecture of the system, some enterprise data exchange system is analyzed and demonstrated, and settlement scheme and implementation methods are presented. In addition, the application of data exchange model in other field, such as 3D graphic data exchange, is discussed. Through the analysis of data exchange and mapping, some suggestions of design and implementation of the system are given.
