Internet is the base facilities of the information society, ADSL becomes the core technology of the broadband access, DSLAM is the key of the ADSL. Traditional DSLAM fall into two categories, one is based on GPCPU; the other is based on ASIC. The former is of low processing performance while the latter is of poor scalability. In order to enhance the performance and strengthen the flexibility of DSLAM, a new architecture of DSLAM based on IXP2350 is analyzed and designed in this paper. After the network processor and the IP-DSLAM are briefly introduced, the paper analyzes and designs the implementation of downstream IP DSLAM. We divide the software into 4 four modules: Ethernet receive module, data processing module, Queue management and schedule module, AAL5 transmit modules, which runs 4 micro engine to process data. Then we propose the implementation of each module, including the data structure and data processing chart.Last but not least, we use IXA platform to make simulation and verify the software, which shows that the software can run normally, and could get the anticipated result. In this way, we verify that the implementation of downstream DSLAM is right. Finally, the paper shows the future of DSLAM based on network processor.
