Because of the merits such as facile maintence, high brandwidth and low cost, the passive optical network becomes one of the outstanding access networks. It is considered as the ideal physical platform through which multi-services like voices, data and vedio are accessed. Ethernet is high efficient and of simple protocol when it transports IP services, so Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network which is assoticated by Ethernet technology and PON technology is the ideal way to realize rapid speed, wide bandwidth and integrated access. In this article, MPCP and OAM, two sub-layers of GEPON are deeply analyzed in the terms of functions. And it summarizes a remote control and management scheme of the olt to the remote onu.In GEPON system, the poit-to-multi-point topology structure is adopted, in which, olt is placed in the controlling bureau, and onus are placed in the subscribers' houses. After the system is established, it's very inconvenient to configure onu directly. Combining MPCP protocol and OAM protocol, using olt to control remote onus that are connected with can make GEPON system more adapting to maintain and promote. In the IEEE802.3ah protocol, no specific rules about onu's authentication ways are defined. In this article, a specific method of onu authentication is defined. And in the case of no specific rules of OAM protocol expanding function's application and realization, expand OAM protocol to service user's higher layer application. Management data are transmitted and received through OAM management channel to realize olt configure remote onus.As the beginning of this article, the present situateion of the access network and its development trend in the future are analyzed and concluded, and separately, the structure, working principle, optical design and layers structure of GEPON are introduced, and the technical adventages and key technologies are summarized. Taken IEEE802.3ah protocol as the reference, which is the standard protocol of the GEPON, the whole software design of GEPON is introduced. The MPCP sub-layer protocol and its main functions are introduced in detail. A method of onu authentication is designed by analyzing the automatic discovering principle of the onu to make the onu receive service data. The OAM sub-layer protocol is also introduced in detail. Expanding the OAM protocol function makes the olt to configure and manage the remote onu.The presented scheme can provide a new efficient method for olt to control remote onus, which could be generalized to use. It can help operators savemanagement and maintaining cost. And it's convenient for subscribers and workers who're in charge of maintenance.
