Due to the mature technology and broad application of the Ethernet, Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) has now virtually been the most popular technology in the access network. In this study, we discuss and evaluate some key theory and design issues for EPON access networks. With reference to the latest draft D3.1 of IEEE P802.3ah, we first introduce the basic theories and techques about PON Point to Multi-Point system, such as system architecture of EPON, Point to Point Emulation and some key aspects of Multi-Point Control Protocol (MPCP), including the newly defined MPCP processes, MPCPDU formats and ranging technology. Second, we discuss the dynamic bandwidth distribution for PON networks. We propose a new dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for multimedia services over PON. First, we introduce the basic algorithm. It's based on IPACT but does a better job. Second, we focus on how to improve it to provide high quality of multi-service. After discuss two commonly used methods and point out their shortcomings, we propose a new way named as Dynamic Emergent Window Insertion. It's compatible with the basic algorithm and transmits different kinds of data effectively. We also give the simulation results showing the performance of the new algorithm. At the end of this study, we research into how to develop the network management program over EPON. We choose to design it based on Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and develop it over Windows Operation System by using windows...
