Since EFMA (Ethernet First Mile Alliance, Ethernet in the first mile alliance)in2004June release of EPON specification IEEE802.3ah, EPON technology has gotfast development, at present the related chips and devices are already mature, andhave a larger scale applications. After the organization for standardization,equipment and chip manufacturers, operators work together, commercial EPON chipand optical module is already mature, realize the EPON chip level and system levelof interoperability test; EPON industry chain in mature further, form the benignmarket competition pattern, equipment cost is reduced further, has reached the scalecommercial level. Implementation of Jinan Unicom broadband upgrade program, thecomprehensive application of Epon has become the basic requirements.The Jinan metropolitan access network in a large number of the use of Epontechnology, Epon technology of FTTX provide a good platform. The paper firstintroduce the EPON technology development status, main character eristic,standardization, discuss the working principle of EPON, lists the key techniqueof EPON. Design the EPON in Jinan Unicom large-scale applications are based on theconstruction standards and implementation plan, discussed EPON businesscapabilities and requirements, bearing network application through the list of EPONin the Jinan metropolitan area network application case, select the solutions andthe main equipment, EPON metropolitan area network application case in organizationand design, the advantages and effect conduct in-depth research and analysis. Onthe application of EPON problems are summarized and analyzed, put forward tosafeguard the solving process, offer reference for practitioners.
