As an integral part of newspaper, the format of newspaper has been influential in the recognition, consumption and distribution of various kinds of newspaper product in this market economy. With the emergency of Internet, the fourth generation media has greatly changed our traditional means of transmission. Against such a background, the format of newspaper has undergone substantial changes to cater for the needs of a critical consumer and face the growing competitive market. Compared with the traditional newspapers, the new ones are a far cry from the old ones in respect of the format.Based on a collection of a large number of newspaper formats, according to the definition of format and the modern format designing theory, this thesis discusses the direct influence of the Internet transmission on the transformation of newspapers and gives a detailed analysis of the format of newspaper from both exterior and interior aspects. Firstly, there is an analysis of the favorable differences in size, color, and other exterior elements of the newspapers in this Internet Era with that of old ones. As for the interior factors, it points out the new emergency of huge subject numbers of features in the newspapers. Then it takes a sample paper as the analyses and the formation changes in the front page, the arrangement of words, the visual effect and format features.Besides these, it gives a further analysis of the great changes in the functions of newspaper format and format concept under the influence of Internet transmission. Lastly, while praising their referential value in newspaper format designing, it points out their causes and disadvantages.
