The research on MIP technology has become the hot spot. Mobile IP mechanism can provide a mobile data solution in the global Internet. With this mechanism, the mobile node can connect to wherever with a permanent IP address. Now, the research mainly focuses on how to guarantee communication continuity during MIP handover process, how to reduce the handover delay and how to assure the smooth handover and QoS.In this paper, firstly we describe the concepts and processes of mobile IPv6. We discuss several popular handover technologies extending the standard mobile IPv6, such as fast handover, HMIPv6 and fast handover using HMIPv6. Secondly, comparing with MIPv6 and HMIPv6, F-HMIPv6 is good at communication continuity and delay but poor at the handover frequency. So IHM-F-HMIPv6 is introduced as novel handover architecture. IHM-F-HMIPv6 uses the non-fixative managing domain of the MAP to reduce communication delay when the MN moves in the domain or between the domains. It can also reduce the handover frequency, hold the continuity of the correspondence and make the load of MAP balance when handovers occur.Finally we use NS2 to emulate this architecture, analysis the results, and prove its availability on reducing communication delay and handover frequency. On the basis of which, the future work is presented.
