Image fusion is a process of combining information from multiple images of the same scene. It can extract features from source images, and provide more information than one image can. The wavelet decomposition has become an attractive tool for fusing multisensor images. Usually, the input images are decomposed with an orthogonal wavelet in order to extract features, which are combined through an appropriate fusion rule. The fused image is then reconstructed by applying the inverse wavelet transform. Image fusion algorithms based on Wavelet-transformation plays an important role in image processing, it provides a technique to decompose an image and extract information from coarse to fine scale.Wavelet transform-based image fusion schemes have already found their wide usage in the scientific and industrial community. In many application scenarios such as image fusion, image database indexing and retrieval, parallel processing capability is desirable because of the huge volume of data and real-time processing demand. Parallel wavelet image fusion is an interesting research topic, so far a significant amount of work is under way on parallel wavelet transform algorithms.A systematic introduction about the traditional image fusion principles, fusion systems and wavelet transformation theories and methods is presented in this paper firstly. Then anovel Wavelet-transformation based image fusion method (WTIFM) and fusion systemstructure have been studied systematically. It is shown that the performance of WTIFM is much better than that of traditional fusion algorithm, In order to search the optimal decomposing layer in wavelet transformation process, a weighted normalization method has been proposed and the good result is obtained. Considering that enormous data quantity influence the development of wavelet transformation in real image fusion, the parallel wavelettransformation fusion method and its system structure are derived. Finally, the improved parallel image fusion algorithms based on Wavelet-transformation are proposed and completed under PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) circumstance, and then, the considerable acceleration ratio, high efficiency and well scalable curves have been acquired. The practicability and feasibility of the algorithms has been demonstrated at last.
