Broadband Internet Traffic Measurement And Analysis

As the representative of IP network, Internet has become the infra-structure of our society by degrees with its rapid development. Following by the development of Internet is the increase of its scale, complexity and bandwith. However man has little knowledge of the work characteristics of Internet. So network measurements emerged as the times require under the circumstances, which can observe and evaluate network behavior and attempt to improve the performance and service level of operational network through the measurement, characterization, modeling, and control of Internet traffic.This paper firstly introduces the current status of the network measurement studies. Secondly, the relative contents about the network measurement are proposed, including the methods of network performance measurement: the active measurement and the passive measurement. Furthermore, we introduce the worldwide development of some main projects about Network Measurement infrastructure.Network Simulation is the important instrument and method of network characteristic researches, we introduce the NS-2 simulation tool, which is commonly used in the fields of network simulation. Then we study on NS-2 and explain how to use NS-2 to do network simulation.We use the packet capture technic of passive collection to collect the traffic data within the ethernet section based on WinPcap. At present, it is very difficult to measure full traffic trace with the advent of high-speed network technologies, so the investigation of traffic sampling measure becomes the focus of the study of high-speed network traffic measurement. In this paper, we analyze and study on classical sampling measurement technology, and then improve an adaptive sampling measurement based on other methods.An analysis of the characteristics and modeling of high-speed network traffic is the branch of research on network technologies. Specific traffic characteristic is the basis of many pivotal network technologies, such as network congestion-control andresource-utilization, so the analysis of the characteristics and modeling of traffic are vital on theoretics and practicality about network framework design and performance optimization. The study in the area of performance evaluation of network shows the real traffic on backbone link has self-similarity and then this is the new direction about the traffic model. In this article, we describe how to simulate self-similar traffic and create the traffic on NS-2 environment.
