The ship is a mobile system, and the information interaction between the ship and land is a continuously developing research problem. At present, the products related to video monitoring are coming into market rapidly, thereby its research and application to ship monitoring become prevalent, which facilitates the ship management of shipping company and the supervision of maritime department.The paper summarizes the general situation and trend of video monitoring system, and describes simply the elementary theory of Embedded System. Aiming at the functional requirements of research project about the ship video monitoring system, it designs and realizes the Embedded Ethernet/CDMA Gateway. The device adopts the embedded system technology, the mobile telecommunication technology and the video compression technology.The paper builds the Linux cross-develop platform based on ARM, then designs the hardware and the software system. The Embedded Ethernet/CDMA Gateway transforms and transmits the video streams (TCP/IP format) from video encoder to the CDMA network provided by China Unicom through CDMA MODEM.The Embedded Gateway based on ARM and Linux provides a pivotal device for the video monitoring system through wireless network which can be used in the ship located in the freshwater area and offing area, and it has the practical significance in the ship monitoring. Furthermore, the Gateway can be used in other occasions where transmission is needed through wireless mode. Consequently, it is universal in a certain extent, which embodies the value of its development.
