As high speed optical transmission technology and intelligent optical networking technology gradually become mature, modern communication network is developing toward high speed and broad bandwidth. As the key component of high performance broad bandwidth information network, high performance router must be adjustable to the expanding of information capacity and the need of diversity of networking applications, terabit router has become the key equipment of telecommunication backbone network.The application of parallel switching architecture in terabit router makes the load-balance problem become the key of router design. Variable length switching technology brings new challenge to load balance mechanism. This paper makes analysis and studies of parallel switching load balance, and proposes PLC_LBA, feedback-enabled PLC_LBA and PDDLB algorithms that represent comparable high fairness and one load balance architecture that supports traffic sequence keeping function. The performance analysis of load balance mechanism of the above algorithms are also presented here. This paper designs the hardware implementation scheme of feedback-enabled PLC_LBA algorithm which is applied successfully in national 863 programme "Terabit scalable high performance IPv4/v6 router basic platform and its experiment system".The key contributions of this thesis include:· The model of load balancing in parallel packet switch is proposed.The definitions of the load balancing performance index are given.· A kind of load balance architecture based on packet length classification named PLCLB is proposed.PLC_LBA algorithm,feedback-enabled PLC_LBA algorithm,PDDLB algorithm are proposed and analyzed.The analysis results show that all the three algorithms can reach a good performance on distributing packets fairly.· A packet order keeping load balance architecture named LBFOK and its packet distribute algorithm PDFC are proposed and analyzed.The analysis results show that LBFOK with PDFC mechanism get the characteristic of load balancing and packet order keeping.· Feedback-enabled PLC_LBA algorithm is chosen for the Terabit Router Proiect based on the principle of fairness priority.A load balance mechanism with feedback-enabled PLC_LBA algorithm is designed.And the mechanism is used in the Terabit Router Project successfully.
