As a key technology in implementing modern business process management and control, workflow provides a whole framework for business enterprise from process definition to process execution and control. With the development of workflow, more and more research is concerned on the security and reliability of WfMS.Nowadays, the most important issue in the research of WfMS is how to build workflow management system with web technology. In order to improve the performance of effective workflow management, there are several optimization proposals in this paper directly to the WfMS which is based on the web.To begin with the fundamental principles concerning the WfMS, this paper is based on a project which is requested by the Japan Airline, a web-based workflow management system. First of all, it explores the architecture of web-based workflow management system, and elaborates basic concepts and key technologies involved within this system, such as the design of workflow model, definition of major functions. Then, it analyzes the common and standard implementation on web-based workflow management system. Taking"J-flow"as an example, with a reference to the latest information security knowledge and latest technology of the Oracle database 9i, this paper is concentrated in recording improvement of web-based workflow management system, in the respect of system security and database optimization, being supplied with an extensive testing data and detail analysis on performance of the database. In the end, it summarizes the problems and corresponding solution within this system. As a successful application of web-based workflow technology,"J-flow"can meet the requirements of commercial workflow management system, and has already been put into use, performing quite well.
