Modern embedded systems can be utilized in widespread applications, and enrich increasingly people's life. One of the most successful application fields of embedded system is mobile communication terminal. With the improvement of wireless communication rate, voice communication service terminal and personal information managing terminal are being integrated, which results in smart phone. And with the increase of user demands and the improvement of hardware, convenient, simple and beautiful user interface giving up tediousness and complicated operation has been in demand. All of this is based on a high performance and robust graphical user interface supporting system—embedded window system.By studying the current prevalent graphical user interfaces, and using object oriented software engineer approaches such as layering, modularization, the thesis point out the design goals of embedded window system, the separation of system modules and structure model. It also presents the key techniques for embedded window system which are message driving, application managing and three layers interface. After the theory studying, I port Prowave GUI which is an embedded window system product from Prowave technologies Ltd on window managing, application managing and message driving, also extend display interface and multimedia interface to improve mobile communication terminal's performance on multimedia and display.At last, the ported PGUI is adopted in new product. The result indicates the ported PGUI is steady, logical, and can be a commercial product. It also has good performance.
