Grid Technology And Its Applications In Distant Education Systems

Grid is an integrated computing and resource environment, whose core is to eliminate isolated information island and realize resource sharing, including computing resource, storing resource, communication resource, software resource, information resource, knowledge resource, and so on. At present, Internet, as the based platform, has greatly promoted the distant learning, realizing the governance and sharing of education resources and cooperative learning. But, because of the heterogeneity of Internet (both of the software and hardware), the education resources cannot be shared sufficiently, and lots of them are redeveloped. Applying grid technology to education field will greatly improve the conditions of distant learning.This paper had fully and systemically discussed the system structure of grid, compared all kinds of different grid system and development system and summarized the differences and strengths at the fundamental structure and system structure. Because service is the core of grid, the key of the grid application is how to establish the service system. For this reason this paper studied the establishment of grid service. In this way the paper proposed a design scheme for the distant learning system of graduate school grid environment and provided part of implementation detail. This paper also gave an real case of teaching resources of Economics and Management School of Tianjin Professional College.This paper is consisted of the following aspects: (1) the introduction of the current distance learning status and its existing problems, describing this research's contents and related meaning; (2) introducing the concept of grid, its research framework and related technology and application in the education field; (3) studying the design and grid development tools such as Globus Toolkit in the grid environment of school; (4) the real application of grid technology in distance learning.
