To meet the need of social development and with the evolution in the technologies of communication, embedded system and sensors, the wireless sensor network (WSN) featuring the ability of sensing, computing and wireless communication already attracts wide attention. Aimed at the design of the sensor node in a WSN, the dissertation carried out a sound study on the development, present status, some key technique, as well as the basic principles and philosophy of WSN. The author believes that low-power-consumption, expandability and flexibility should be the key considerations to the success of a WSN, and to achieve these requirements necessitates deep study and careful design for the node's hardware/software, system configuration and operational strategy. The dissertation work carried the design of a WSN node based on an 8bit low-power microcontroller ATmega128 and wireless transceiver chip CC1000, the transplanting and embedding of open-coded TinyOS operating system with the emphasis on the mechanism of low power consumption. The work also studied the timing-synchronization in a WSN and implemented TPSN algorithm in the node's design. A test had been performed for the TPSN between two nodes on a test platform and the result verified the effectiveness of the algorithm. The dissertation work is just a beginning of the further development of new WSN.
