With the development of computer and communications technology, the development of sensor technology also comes into a new stage, an intelligentized and network stage. The intelligentized technology gives the sensor a brain, and therefore the sensor has the ability to process data. Meanwhile, the network technology gives the sensor means of communication. The combination of modern network communications technology and smart sensor technology, which is one of the significant developing tendencies of the smart sesors, makes the sensor have the communication function based on the specific network protocol at where it is. But the interchangeability and interoperability of the sensors of different manufacturers bring great difficulty to the research and development of the sensors, system integration and maintainace. While the IEEE1451 family standards proposed by the organization of IEEE has well solved these problems, and accelerates the development of smart sensor network.This paper implements the network-capable application processor (NCAP) in smart sensor network nodes based on the research on IEEE1451 family standards.The paper briefly introduces the related technologies of smart sensor network and these standards; presents the common design of network smart sensor nodes and the mode and merits of smart sensor according with IEEE1451 family standards; analyzes the basic model of NCAP. According to these standards, the paper proposes layering designs of NCAP system, and selects the 2410II system produced by the company of Shenzhen Yuanfeng as the NCAP embedded hardware platform. To satisfy the demand of NCAP system, bootloader is ported, and the embedded multitasking operation system Linux is collocated, clipped and compiled.The paper designs hot-plugging driver and the TII interface driver corresponding to IEEE1451.2 standard, realizes the fundamental communication interfaces of Service class and its subclass in IEEE1451.1 standard. Based on this, the paper designs server-model NCAP application program and long-distance client-end software. Combined with the smart sensor front-end STIM technology, this paper realizes an integrated smart sensor visit and control network system, and validates the multifunction of NCAP, such as the Hot Swap for STIM and the network exchange visits.The design and implement of NCAP makes good interchangeability and interoperability of the sensors of different manufacturers, and realizes the repeatability and commonality of the communication processing module of smart sensor network nodes.
